What sparked your interest regarding starting a business?
I love the idea of being my own boss and since I am an artist it only makes sense for me to brand myself thus starting my own business. I much rather work for myself and put my own value on my work, than show up at an office and get paid a low salary for some really hard work. Graphic designers are usually in front of the computer all day. I would much rather be doing exactly what I love on my own time and getting paid what I believe is sufficient towards my quality of work and skill. For example at an office I would be given orders while I sit at my cubicle as opposed to my own business where I get to go out take photos, meet people, and make things happen. There’s more adventure to it all.
Why did you choose this particular business to start?
I chose to brand myself as a graphic designer because it is what I’m best at. I have been messing around with desktop publishing applications since I was in middle school and I developed a knack for it. Soon enough I indulged myself in any type of books, tutorials, or lesson I could. I continued to grow my skills and naturally decided to start a business with my skills.
How has the OPRF School of Business assisted in your decision to start and run your own business?
I think the OPRF School of Business gave me some direction to what to do with my skills. Although, a lot of it was self-motivation and hard work, but the OPRF School of Business showed me that is was possible for anyone to start a business. I used to think that business were big firms and companies that just happen to exist, but I was soon schooled on the fact that an artist selling his or her talents is a business as well.
If you could tell all the OPRF School of Business students something about being an entrepreneur, what would it be?
Don’t expect anything to happen if you don’t make it happen. I can’t stress this enough, but being an entrepreneur is a full time job and it is essential that you put in the work to make your business run.
What would you tell students who have not taken a class in the OPRF School of Business?
I would say take one class to see if you like business. You might take one class and end up taking them all or you might take a class and realize maybe business isn’t for you which is fine, but how would you know if you don’t try. So Just do it.
What drives you to succeed?
Honestly there is a lot that drives me to succeed. Growing up my dream was to become something or somebody, so I set a goal that I would become successful and I’ll be chasing that until I die. Also growing up on the rough side of childhoods I’d let to provide my own children in the future with the life I never had, but I’ll find a way to make them work for the things I give them as well. In life nothing is just handed to you.
What are any take-always from your education in the OPRF School of Business that you utilize in your business?
I put in work; I think that was one thing that was stressed a bunch in my business management class. You don’t work don’t expect to get anywhere.
What is your most memorable moment in a OPRF School of Business class?
My most memorable moment at the OPRF School of Business was being able to present a business idea in front of people from Coca-Cola. Sure the idea I had probably wasn’t going anywhere, but it was a great experience to have spoken with people from a major company.
Where would you like to see the OPRF School of Business in 5 years?
I would like to see the OPRF School of Business continuing to inspire young minds to chase their entrepreneurial dreams.
